It all started with the pizzelles. Every year at Christmastime my father
would carry on the Oppedisano family tradition and make loads of pizzelles
to give away. He left them
out overnight to dry so when I woke up in the morning the smell of anise
had filled the house. Soon enough, I became addicted to the
taste -- one was never enough!
Missing this wonderful childhood
experience compelled me to carry on the pizzelle torch with my children.
I took the old family recipe, did
a little research, and added a few modifications to make them sweeter, thinner and not as
dry. In 2010 I gave out over 200
pizzelles that were so good, folks asked if I made other Italian
cookies. That’s when the real
fun began!
My dad and I still debate over who has
the best pizzelle. Since I
live so close to Canada I brag that mine are “internationally
famous.” As for the
other cookies...well I really just make them because I like to eat them! And when others partake I’m
satisfied to know I’m making the world a little more Italian, one cookie
at a time.
